Graduation 2005

July 2005
Swansea University's graduation ceremonies for 2005 took place last week at the city's Brangwyn Hall.
One of the first students to graduate was Swansea Osprey's rugby player Richie Pugh.
'My degree in Sports Science helped prepare me for the demands of sporting life. In both you need to be organised, have time management skills, balance training and studying', said Richie.
'The course also gave me a good background knowledge which has definitely helped my game. It was important to me to have an academic qualification to fall back on after my sports career is over.'
In keeping with the rugby theme, former Wales and British Lions rugby superstar Rob Howley was made an Honorary Fellow by Swansea University.
A graduate from Swansea in Management Science, Rob won 59 Wales caps, captained Wales to 20 wins in 28 games and has twice toured with the British Lions.
'I have happy memories of my degree course at Swansea from 1989 to 1992, so it's a great honour to be invited to come down and receive this award. I always used to feel comfortable and at ease here and I'm pleased to say that I've felt this again today - it's a friendly place,' said Rob.
Other Honorary Fellows conferred this year include Professor Andy Hopper, currently Professor of Computer Technology at Cambridge University; Professor Ian Gibson Halliday; Sir Clive Granger (awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2003); Sir Archie Lamb KBE; Professor Bernhard Schrefler; Anne Ellis OBE; the Rt Rev and Rt Hon the Lord Carey of Clifton and Professor Sir Alec John Jeffreys who discovered genetic fingerprinting.
Congratulations to everyone graduating this year and thank you to all those who completed their registration forms for the Alumni Association.
